Information about training for chiropodists / podiatrists in prescription only medicines

Our role in approving prescription only medicine training

If you wish to offer a new prescription only medicine programme, you will need to seek approval for the programme.

Appropriately qualified chiropodists / podiatrists may lawfully sell, supply and administer certain medicines in the course of their professional practice. Find out more about this entitlement on our page about medicines and prescribing rights.

Appropriately qualified chiropodists / podiatrists have their registration records annotated with:

  • prescription only medicines – administration (POM-A); and / or
  • prescription only medicines – sale / supply (POM-S)

Education and training in the administration, sale and supply of medicines on the exemption lists is now an integral part of pre-registration education and training that leads to eligibility to apply for registration with us as a chiropodist / podiatrist. The skills required for this are described in our standards of proficiency. All new graduates from approved programmes who become registered will have the ‘POM-A’ and ‘POM-S’ annotations.

Education providers are able to run standalone programmes in the annotations, if they wish to upskill any registered chiropodists / podiatrists who does not have their registration record annotated.
