Medicines and prescribing rights

Working with medicines is routine for most of our professions. However, it comes with higher levels of risk compared with other areas of practice

It is important registrants therefore understand the law and what they can and cannot do. If working in this area, you will need to know:

What those rights mean, and how you can use these in practice

Sale, supply and administration

Local arrangements can be made to allow health and care professionals who are not prescribers to supply or administer medicines

Prescribing

To be a prescriber means to have the legal authority to issue prescriptions

Controlled drugs

Controlled drugs are subject to additional legal controls as they carry a higher risk of being misused or causing harm

Additional advice and support

Specific guidance relating to key areas, such as scope of practice, vaccine administration and specific roles
