HCPC welcomes Government proposals to reform healthcare professional regulation

09 Gor 2019

The UK Department of Health & Social Care has published its keenly awaited response to the consultation on Promoting professionalism, reforming regulation.

Christine Elliott, Chair of Council said,

“HCPC fully supports the Government’s proposals. The modernisation of fitness to practise processes and legislative streamlining will enable the HCPC to become a more agile, responsive and collaborative regulator.

“In today’s fast changing healthcare environment, the proposed changes will boost our drive to be a lean regulator, working across the system and investing to protect the public we serve and the professions we regulate.”

Marc Seale, Chief Executive and Registrar said,

“We welcome these proposals. When implemented, they will bring benefits to all our stakeholders, including service users, employers and registrants themselves. We will continue to work closely with the UK and Devolved Governments to implement the new legislation in due course. ”

Notes to Editors

The Health and Care Professions Council is an independent regulator set up by the Health and Social Work Professions Order 2001. The HCPC keeps a register for 16 different health and care professions and only registers people who meet the standards it sets for their training, professional skills, behaviour and health. The HCPC will take action against professionals who do not meet these standards or who use a protected title illegally.

The HCPC currently regulates 16 health and social care professions. Each of these professions has one or more ‘protected titles’. Anyone who uses one of these titles must register with the HCPC. The full list of protected titles can be found here.

Requests for interview should be made through the HCPC Press Office via email: press@hcpc-uk.org.
